Using Electronic Resources to Build Reading Lists

It is preferable that you link to materials whenever possible. In the event that you cannot link to the materials you wish to assign to your students as reading for a particular course, you may scan and upload the materials to your CourseWorks page, provided that your material falls into one of the following categories:

  • I own the copyright
  • I obtained permission from the copyright owner
  • The material is in the public domain
  • The material is designated open access by the copyright owner
  • I have assessed the use of the material as being a fair use

Before scanning and uploading material to CourseWorks, please review the information and guidance found on the Columbia University Copyright Advisory Office website This page includes explanatory information about how you can use in copyright materials in conjunction with CourseWorks to provide your students with access to materials in a manner consistent with copyright law. You should also consider the application of fair use and the Fair Use Checklist
